Benburb Castle and Priory Estate invite visitors to explore over a thousand years of history set within the scenic Blackwater River valley. Highlights include guided tours of Benburb Castle and the 19th century Priory Manor House, with access to areas normally closed to the public, including the Library and Museum. Talks, cultural activities and exhibitions bring the site’s rich past vividly to life. Associated with Shane O’Neill, the Castle is central to understanding Gaelic Ireland before the Plantation of Ulster, later connections with the Wingfield family and Powerscourt, and the pivotal Battle of Benburb (1646). This year marks the centenary of the Castle being in state care, underlining its national importance. The Priory community acts as keyholders for Benburb Castle, working in partnership with the Historic Environment Division to support access and active use of the monument—demonstrating how collaboration and community engagement help sustain historic places. The Priory Manor House, now home to the Servite Order, was once the residence of Belfast born philanthropist and whiskey distiller James Bruce and later served as a US Army field hospital during the Second World War. Woodland walks and riverside views complete a visit that blends history, landscape and living heritage.
