Prepare to be surprised by the “Stories behind the Stones” of this beautiful Grade A listed early 17th century church!! Built in 1618 by Sir Richard Wingfield, who became the first Viscount Powerscourt, it is documented as being the oldest church in the north west of Ireland still in regular use. It remained part Powerscourt Estate until 1877 when the Tyrone part of the estate was purchased by the Belfast businessman James Bruce.
Follow the self-guided tour to discover how features within the church highlight its witness to major events in Irish history, notably the 1641 rebellion, the Battle of Benburb in 1646, the Williamite campaign, the 1798 United Irishmen’s Rebellion, the Famine, Home Rule campaign and the Easter Rising. There are also links to Trinity College Dublin and to the local linen industry. There are 5 stained glass windows of note dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dander around the Churchyard Trail (appropriate footwear advised) to find, amongst other memorials of interest, the earliest stone dating from 1660 and a headstone commemorating a soldier of the American Civil War. Information is provided throughout the trail.
