About
Join us at Benburb Priory Library & Museum for an insightful talk on Ethna Carbery (Anna Johnson McManus, 1864–1902), a poet, writer, editor, and Irish nationalist.
A passionate advocate for Irish feminism and the Irish language, Carbery played an important role in the cultural and literary revival of the late 19th century. Alongside Alice Milligan, she helped shape Ireland’s cultural identity during this period.
She was the founder and joint editor of The Shan Van Vocht magazine, which had a wide influence across Ireland, England, and North America, and supported the early promotion of the GAA. Carbery was also involved in key organisations such as the Gaelic League, the Henry Joy McCracken Society, the Celtic Literary Society, and was a founding member of the Daughters of Erin.
This talk will also reveal a little-known connection between Ethna Carbery and Benburb Priory.
