About
Experience Centuries of Faith and Heritage on a Thursday Tour at Benburb Priory
Explore the historic Benburb Castle, originally a 16th century stronghold of Shane O'Neill, one of the most influential Gaelic lords of his time. In 1611, Sir Richard Wingfield restructured the fortress as part of the Ulster Plantation, leaving behind the stone castle and bawn still standing today within the Priory grounds.
In the 19th century, James Bruce, a successful Belfast distiller, transformed the estate by constructing the impressive Manor House (now the Servite Priory) and reshaping the village with buildings and residences. His legacy lives on in the architecture and layout of modern-day Benburb.
The estate also played a remarkable role in the 20th century. During World War II, the Manor House was used by the Royal Army Medical Corps as a 166 bed hospital, later housing the U.S. 7th Field Hospital. These walls became a place of care, healing, and international co-operation during a time of global conflict.
In 1949, thanks to the efforts of Fr. James Keane of Chicago, the Servite Friars took over the estate, transforming it into a spiritual retreat and centre for theological study and community outreach. Their legacy continues today, nurturing reflection, education, and renewal. Tour includes tea/coffee, scone & jam on arrival.
