This magnificent hilltop enclosure rose to historical prominence in the 11th century as a dynastic centre and inauguration site of the Cenél nEógain, a branch of the O’Neill clan. It remained a place of great importance until the defeat of Hugh O’Neill in 1601.
The site was closely associated with the O’Hagans, who, alongside the O’Cahans, carried out the traditional inauguration ceremonies of the O’Neill chieftains—an important ritual in Gaelic Ireland.
Today, visitors can explore this evocative landscape and reflect on its role in Ireland’s political and cultural history. The site is open and unstaffed, with good interpretation panels available to help bring its story to life.
