Lissan House is a 400-year-old property set within 260 acres of ancient woodland in the foothills of the Sperrins. The family home of the Staples family, Baronets of Lissan and Faughanvale from 1628, the house and estate were gifted to the community by the last owner, Hazel Radclyffe Dolling, following her death in 2006. Today, Lissan House is entirely volunteer-run, with all running, insurance and restoration costs supported through fundraising efforts.
This EHOD mini tour offers an engaging introduction to the many colourful and eccentric characters associated with Lissan, from the renowned artist Sir Robert Ponsonby Staples, known as the “Barefoot Baronet,” to Handsome Kitty Hawkins, as well as the estate’s ancestral connection to C.S. Lewis.
Reflecting the theme of Heritage at Risk, visitors will also have the opportunity to view ongoing restoration work in the yard buildings. Volunteers have been carefully undertaking repairs to stabilise these structures, revive once-derelict spaces and reimagine their future use, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of Lissan House.
